Jeeps - Actual Jeeps

September 6, 2025

So much hotness here. Never mind the clunky ad copy - “Jeep makes history again with the biggest sale in Jeep history” - the fine folks at American Motors had the goods in the early 80s. The CJ, the big Cherokee, the actual Wagoneer, the normal pickup and the Scrambler; these were real machines. Then Renault got their little French fingers into the mix, which led to the assassination of the Renault CEO. The brand was then sold to Chrysler and the long, steady transformation of Jeep into something a lot less special got underway behind the square headlights of the original Wrangler and the killing of the CJ.

Today the Franco/Italian/American parent company based in Hoofddorp, Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands (I did not just have a stroke - those are real place names) will sell you all manner of overpriced rolling shipping containers with ample space for rubber ducks on your dashboard, but they don’t sell actual Jeeps. Sure, you can feel like a real adventurer heading down to the Florida panhandle from your suburban Tennessee identikit subdivision in one of these things, but don’t do your little “Jeep wave” at somebody driving an actual CJ, because they ain’t gonna wave back.
